How to become a Rider? How much do you earn?
How to become a rider for Just Eat, Glovo, Deliveroo, Uber Eats, or one of the numerous food delivery companies? Here is the first complete guide to advice and information on this profession.
With the 2020 lockdown, the food delivery sector has grown impressively.
Home deliveries have become the norm and at the same time the only way for many restaurateurs and businesses to continue selling and offering their products and services.
Precisely for this reason more and more people are interested in having information on the profession of the rider, the delivery man who deals with home deliveries generally for food delivery companies such as:
- Deliveroo
- Glovo
- Just Eat
- MyMenu
- Uber Eats
Home delivery of food
Home delivery of food has become the norm for many people.
If in the past these services were used only when meeting with friends and wanted to “order a pizza”, today there are many people who use food delivery to eat for lunch and dinner.
Not just pizza: hamburgers, salads, poké, sushi, and even grilled meat at home: today, home delivery of food has become the norm, and for this reason, the figure of the rider is increasingly sought after.
How to become a Rider?
There is no age to be a rider: whether you are a student who wants to have an extra income or an unemployed person looking for a job opportunity, the rider is a job that anyone can do.
All you have to do is accept or decline takeaway food delivery orders from your smartphone, then collect the orders at restaurants or businesses and deliver them to customers by your favorite means of transport (car, car, bike).
Anyone can be a rider.
You do not need skills of any kind, but it is necessary to have a means of transport and a driving license clearly (unless you do home deliveries by bike).
We will also need a smartphone and a data connection on our smartphone to receive orders, get driving directions and get in touch with customers.
To start working as a rider you can apply on the various food delivery sites. In the cover image you can see for example the Deliveroo application page, which explains how the system works:
- Choose where and how much to earn on a scooter, bike, or car
- You decide when to work
- Get support at any time
All you need is a bicycle, a scooter, or a car with a license and insurance.
A smartphone with iOS 12, Android 6.0, or later operating system.
Permission to work in EUROPE as a self-employed person.
Deliveroo also offers Rider Support, safety training, and a delivery kit, as well as free accident and third-party insurance coverage.
Many food delivery companies offer their riders basic equipment, namely:
- The reflective jacket
- A cooler backpack or cooler bag

How much does a rider make?
How much does a rider make?
It is often mistakenly believed that riders are underpaid.
In reality, according to a recent national collective agreement for the sector signed between Assodelivery and a largely minority trade union (Ugl), a minimum wage of € 10.00 gross per hour was envisaged.
These 10 euros are calculated on the estimated delivery time of the order.
What does it mean?
In fact, the more you can deliver in less time, the more you earn. Some tips are given to those who want to earn more, such as:
- Make deliveries in the evening
- Work as a rider on the weekend
- Make deliveries on rainy days or holidays (as there are incentives)
According to some estimates, making 2 deliveries per hour and working for about three hours it is possible to earn between 25 and 30 euros.
The possibility of obtaining deliveries also varies based on various factors such as:
- Day of the week
- Time slots
- Productivity statistics (number of deliveries, punctuality, )
Gianfranco, a rider who started this activity in 2020, told me that he managed to earn around 200 euros a week by working around 3 hours a day.
Many riders work as casual workers and must open a VAT number when the gross profit exceeds 5000 euros.
In fact, before opening the VAT number, riders have a 20% withholding tax on gross earnings.
Flat rate scheme for home deliveries
The flat-rate regime is a subsidized tax regime ideal for those who want to be a rider or for those who are a rider and have exceeded 5,000 euros in gross earnings.
Delivery man VAT number: why choose the flat rate scheme?
Surely because it is a facilitated tax regime that guarantees a reduction in tax expenses and eliminates a series of bureaucratic procedures, effectively simplifying the keeping of accounts.
A series of requirements must be respected (such as not having received a gross salary exceeding 30,000 euros in the previous year, not having costs related to capital goods exceeding 20,000 euros, and not having costs for collaborators or employees exceeding 5,000 euros gross annual).
Usually, these requirements are met by all people who start working as a rider.
If you are looking for, then a way to comply with the tax and VAT open in the flat-rate scheme you should have a look at my article on FiscoZen and the article on how to find an accountant On-Line.
