Origin of Gua bao dish

The dish was first created and discovered by the people of Fujian, in China. It was created by Taiwanese who came to Fujian after migration. Also, the people of Taiwan popularly cook this dish in their traditions. In 400 BC there was an army general called Zhuge Liang. He initially made this dish famous around the place.

In a battle or military expedition, he won a battle against a king. While he was traveling back to his place. He stopped somewhere. There he met some native men. They told him about their particular beliefs in their religion. Like they put the blood of dead humans in front of their goddess as a ritual. So the general came up with an idea.

Rather than sacrificing a person, he used buns called bao. He put the meat stuffing in them. And then, he makes them halved to look like a head of human beings. Further, he flips them into water running across.

Those natives believed that their goddess was influenced by getting a new dish. So they cleared the ways for the general to proceed their way. From this incident, they named the dish gua bao. And type recipe got introduced.

In the Taiwan region, people traditionally have this dish. It is not restricted to this specific region only. Because people in America also enjoy this food. Some people even name them Taiwanese hamburgers.

Recipe of Gua bao

Ingredients for stuffing

  • 500 grams of Belly of pork
  • A tablespoon oil
  • Crushed garlic about 2 tablespoons
  • The green portion of two spring onions
  • Thinly sliced pieces 3
  • A star anise
  • A stick of cinnamon
  • Chili pepper 5
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauces
  • Sugar 1 tablespoon
  • White pepper 1 teaspoon
  • Water 2 to 3 cups

Gua bao bun ingredients

  • Two cups of all-purpose flour
  • Yeast a teaspoon
  • baking powder 1 teaspoon
  • sugar
  • A pinch salt
  • Milk three-fourth cup

Steps for stuffing

Firstly, make small pieces of pork. Then, pour oil and add the pork belly pieces into it. After that, put them on heat till they change to golden. Next, take them out. Now, put the chopped garlic, chopped spring onions, and ginger into it.

After mixing, put the spices like chili, cinnamon, and star anise into it. Next, pour the soya sauce into it. After cooking them, you need to add water to them. Now add sugar and pepper to the same pan. After that, wait till the mixture boils.

Steps in making Gua bao buns

So you would add flour and all the other dry ingredients in a large container. Now, slowly add milk to the mixture. You need to knead it smoothly for some minutes. After that, cover this container with a damp kitchen cloth. Next, remove the cloth after ten minutes.

You should check whether it has changed its soft texture or not. Now again keep the wet cloth on the container. After some time when you see this dough has been doubling its size. Then, take it out and punch it.

Make the dough into cylindrical shape. Then, slice it into pieces. You need to place a damp cloth because it would lose its moisture otherwise. Afterward, you would make circular balls from it.

And make them in the shape of semicircular. Steam the balls. After that, your buns would have steamed. Now add the pork fillings into the buns. Further, make a small cut in the buns.

Once, you add the sauce on your buns. It would be so tempting to taste. You can put the pork belly in once, you add the sauce to your buns. It would be so tempting to taste. You can put the pork belly in the Dingolay gourmet hot sauce in a pan.
